I have an 85 vette with 500 hp 460 torque 383 stroker. beefed up 700r4 and 2400 stall speed. yesterday for first time took it out on deserted hwy for run. rolled out to 2000 rpm and nailed it, then shifting to second the car made a radical left turn, got out of gas went back to right then left again til finally under control. running bfg hp tires. my thoughts, rear wing for downforce ,street radil drag tires, letting tranny shift on its own. would appreciate any SERIOUS ideas

My 85 did the same thing with only around 300 hp, but spun all the way around after breaking loose to right then left and around to the right .These cars can get squirley quick and I atribute my spin to getting out of the throttle abruptly, overcorrecting and hard tires. Maybe a performance driving school is in my future, would get a little track time anyway.

The C4 is a very predictable platform IMHO. I have never had a real issue with the control if you roll into it, i.e. don’t shock the drive train, you won’t have that result. Getting out of the gas like that is not the thing to do either you unloaded the rear end of the car thus causing the left and right actions you described. The tires can only do 100% of a certain thing at one time. Going to a stickier tire will only mask the problem to a point then you will be carrying more speed when the same result happens and it will be even tougher to regain control. Our 89 has a 383 as well (granted it is a 6 speed versus the auto) but will get loose. I don’t lift at all it goes left just turn into it and stay in the gas. It will do it in 2nd and sometimes depending on road surface and how much heat is in the tires 3rd. Same thing happens with our ZR-1 just get some seat time in the car, learn the car, learn what the feedback the car is giving you means and this will be better than any speed part, tire, or etc.

But I will say the DRM camber and trailing arm brackets do help.
