Need to change the outer window seals on my 90...Never had the door panels off, Any tricks to make this easier, It looks like there riveted on the door... Thanks in Advance for any info.
3 rivets have to be drilled out. I was unable to put new rivets in because my rivet gun would not fit so I took a chance and left them out. The new weatherstrip's clips were plenty tight and held it in place well after I tapped it into place with a rubber mallet. They have stayed in place fine. There's a write up with pictures online by one of the car magazines.
I heard you have to be very careful, otherwise you will drill a hole in yor door! Going to have mine professionally done just incase!
When i replaced my window seals i removed the door trim and window glass, then i used a piece of metal that i held in place behind the weatherstrip in the door for stopping the drill bit. You can use a stainless steel metal ruler also. I did not use rivets on the new seals as they were secure with the clips nice and tight.
I drilled out the rivets on my 87. The first one was scary because I heard about the "drilling through the door" problem. This is however what I learned: treat the drilling as if you are drilling into a fine watch and not 1/4 inch thick steel. Take the first one slow and when the rivet begins to rotate with the bit, stop and pull the remaining part of the rivet out with a pliers or push it in and let it fall to the bottom of the door. Like I said the first one went slow, the rest in about 2 minutes.
Previous poster is right on. Go slow, treat it gently, and watch the rivet until it spins. I just did one and am about to do the other. Personally I would not leave the rivets out.
I havent done this chore, so I may be way out in left field with this comment. The correct way to remove a rivet is to drill the center, then when you have drilled far enough in, pop the head of the rivet with a chisel. Like I said, I havent done this job so chances are it cant be done that way.
pretty sure, that drilling through the door thing is an URBAN LEGEND. about the only way you could drill through you door is to do it deliberately! w/ Steve59 -

i've done it to my 90 coupe, and to be honest, never gave it any thought. just drilled out the 2 (or 3 -???) rivets, replaced the seal, and used my handy pop-rivet gun to install new rivets. had to remove the door panel, but not the glass.
With these, you just push the head of the rivet Out with a punch, gently. If you do not get Rambo on this there is no need to farm it out. I also did not remove the glass.
I have an 86 vert. Do i need to remove the glass to change the outer window weather strips?
Thanks
coupe or convertible shouldn't make a difference. no need to remove the glass, but you will need to remove the door panel. as i recall, there is 3 rivets, and you should have enough room or clearance to drill them out when the window is in the down position.
