Hi - I am having a problem with the electrical system on my 1988 Convertible. I had a drain on the battery that I traced back to the interior light timer, which I replaced. The new one worked for a day or so, but soon the lights didn't work when I opened the doors, and the rear hatch no longer will work. So I thought I received a faulty replacement, so I installed another one, and it worked for a day. I am at a lose, anyone every experience this issue before? Looking at the wiring diagram I was wondering if I could have a bad ground. It seems to interfere with the chimes, (they only chime twice when the doors are open). I could sure use a little guidance / suggestions!
Check the switches in the doors. They very often stick in the pushed-in position.
The hatch release also goes through the timer module. The hatch will not open with the doors closed. I don't know why they did this since you can't get to the hatch release switch anyway with the door closed.
The SECURITY light should come on when you open a door. That will tell you if the switch is working.
The chime only works if the key is in the ignition when you open a door. It will also chime with the headlights/parking lights on and ignition off. It will chime if you don't have the seatbelt fastened when you start the car.

So your hatch don't open if you accidently hit the hatch button at a red light or something.
Hey Cliff thanks for replying. I pulled both switches out today, cleaned and tested the wiring, both seem to work as they should, I even swapped them. I did however notice that the light green wire coming off the chime is not working, that is the wire that controls the open door alarm. The book states there is a ground under the dash, but I can't see it under there. Any idea where they put the darn thing? I have been chasing this issue for over a month, and thought I solved it on more then one occasion. It is like chasing a ghost.
