Corrosion in the battery terminals makes wierd things happen like that. Battery could also be at end of life, the weather changes usually bring out the weak batterys.

Otherwise your VATS may be, if it has trouble reading the chip on your key.

Both can be tested at auto zone or advanced auto for free. Make sure the battery is clean, then charge, then passes a load test before removing the starter. Batteries usually last around five years depending on the type, weather, and maintenance. Starters do wear out. If you have the LT-1 type starter there's a plunger that will wear out copper contacts and then you must rebuild or replace. The starter can be rebuilt for less than $40. If you need a source for parts let me know. I've rebuilt my starter and recently installed a lithium battery for longevity and weight reduction, however the con is cost. A pro is i can turn it off and on with a button without disconnecting any cables. Good luck with your troubleshooting.
A weak battery will do that and restart the car easly after it runs for a while. I'm guessing you didn't leave any acceserorys on while you were in the gym like have several times .
