I'm contemplating painting the area between the fins red or black.

Cleaned up and painted, those would look great for 20 bucks
Certainly better than your current covers ...

VHT hi-temp wrinkle paint (available at O'Reilley or Autozone) looks very sharp. Just make sure that you clean the surface thoroughly with acetone or denatured alcohol and apply as directed. If you put them in the oven at 200 degrees for an hour it tightens up the wrinkle effect and makes it very durable. After its completely cured, you can take a sander and take the paint off of the the top of the ridges. Gives a beautiful look.
Another way to really get them clean is to wait until your wife goes to bed and run them through the dishwasher. Works very well; just don't forget and leave them in there for her to see the next day.
Wife was not thrilled. $20 was a bargain if they fit and don't leak.

The guy had them on his '60 vette, only removed them because he found original corvette valve covers.

Those are great looking covers. Take your time to get them just the way you want them and I think that you'll be very pleased with the final result.
