Sure wish people would list what year car they are asking for help on.

Filling out their profile is the simplest and easiest way.

Then there is no 'guess' work.

the jack doesn't go on the spare tire. Goes in the compartment in back of driver

thanks for your reply but the manual for this car shows a "poor" drawing that indicates the jack is fastened inside the "spare temp tire" by a spring type clip which fell out of the tire and off of the jack when i let the tire carrier down from under the car. it also shows the jack handle in a moulded fit on the top of the radiator cowling which is held in place with another type of clip. this drawing is correct.(the handle was there) what now?

That would depend on the year.
Some years did use the inside of the spare tire for jack storage.
They are not all the same.

I can't tell the OP how the jack secures inside the wheel, because the jack for my '96 stores in the compartment behind the passenger seat.

Never used it , jack is so tight in the wheel it can't go anywhere but it appeared the locking clip went over the jack
and was fitted through one of the stud holes in the wheel fixing the jack in place

Mine too. On the convertibles the jack is stored inside the spare rim and held in place with a strong spring clip.

Most, if not all, coupes store the jack in a compartment behind the seats.

THanks for your input. My jack was in a clear bag also, of course it fell apart as soon as i removed the jack. I will give it another try before i fasten it down another way and put the spring in a bag with the jack. thanks again everyone

I have an 88 - the right side behind the pass seat is a deep compartment - on the lid is the instructions for all the jack and hardware.
Clearly shows everthing inside of this compartment. Nothing on the spare under the back. My car was / is missing all the spare tire and accessories.
I recently purchased a 17 inch aluminum wheel from the junk yard. it came from a 2004 GTO - I had to hog out the hub center about a 1/16 inch for it to fit - but it fits perfectly on the car and up inside the holder. however the bolt and sleeve that tightens in the rear behind the license plate was seized. and took 30 minutes with a torch after I removed the whole bracke assy. what a pita. but got it loose without destroying it. Lube it, re-threaded it , put it up only to find that is slips and is stripped when it goes all the way up to about a half inch from being tight.
I cannot find this long bolt and sleeve piece anywhere - anywhere. os far. I may be forced to modify it some how
sorry bout the long story. Everything on these cars is very difficult
