I have 1986 coupe. I am looking for the paint code. Is it located on the car or is it in the VIN#? I have had many people call my color different names. I think its silver metallic but; there are a few shades of silver.
Is the Service Parts Identifier sticker (also called the RPO sticker) under the console lid?
If so, the bottom printed line should have the paint codes. They are in the form of 2 numbers and a letter U or L. There will also be a "WA-nnnn number. If the car is silver, there should be a 13U. There was also a Silver Beige Metallic (sort of a tan with silver) that is code 59U Here's a link to 86 color chips Not the best representation but it will give you an idea.
Look here for the WA codes; just scroll down to the 1986 list and they will be in the right-most column

thanks...
The paint code is not part of the VIN
It is printed on your RPO Code sticker.
Look for a code starting with BC/CC
(Base Coat/Clear Coat)
You will see something like U 7781
U = Upper
7781 = Silver Metallic
It might also be listed like this: U 7781 L 7781
L = Lower
And if the car is all one color, both number would be the same.
if you go to your local GM dealer parts counter and ask them to run a report on that vin it will tell you what color code it is along with all the options

Not for his '86MY. There is a better chance that it would surface at www.compnine.com but it's unlikely going to be there either. The SPO label is the best bet, if there's no evidence of a repaint assume it's original and work with available options that production year.
The OP hasn't mention why the curiosity - if he's considering some refinish operations a quality shop would do "test panels" first.
