Default Changed Speed Sensor now it whines. Will it stop?

Changed the vehicle speed sensor and I replaced the connector, on the test drive I could hear the sensor or the gear whining. The faster I went the higher the pitch was. Is this normal for a new sensor or is it defective? BTW, It works perfectly. 1994 vette automatic

It's NOT normal! It sounds like the VSS is set to deep in the case and it's hitting the reluctor wheel on the output shaft. Why was the connector changed? Was the connector on the new VSS different from the old VSS? That might indicate maybe the WRONG VSS. What is the part number and brand of the new VSS? Why was it changed? Did NOT work.

If the connector was the same style as the old VSS but just damaged then the VSS is likely just defective. If the connector on the new VSS didn't match the old then I'd think possibly the wrong VSS. Post brand and part nummber!

I have read where the magnet in the VSS has been ground/sanded for clearance on the reluctor wheel but I believe I'd check first the things I've mentioned. VSS also controls some shift characteristics on the 4L60E, I'd probably deal with it sooner than later.

Same part as the old one. I changed the connector because the old one fell apart. I changed the vss because the old one was leaking and figured if I had to pull it I should just replace it.

You mention "same as" - part number and brand? For some reason it's relationship to the reluctor wheel seems "to close"! It's eother driven to deeply into the transmission, the magnet in the sensor isn't positioned correctly in the sensor or it's the wrong one. I understand your rational - why not BUT maybe in this case let's use the one that was removed to compare placement of the magnet OR maybe just use the old one.

Was it just the seal leaking or was it leaking through the electrical connection? Buy a new seal and return the VSS for defective "cash back" if it was only the seal!

The old one is unusable. It broke on the way out. I will try to get it to come out a little. It might just be in too far. I got it at O'reilleys, it's a Borg-Warner part # S8303. Lifetime warranty

I used an on-line catalog that called for a different number for a 1994 with an A4 transmission. Call O'reilly I guess and check. I used the actual GM part number to change to BW and it says it's wrong also!

GM# '94 A4 - 8673299

BW - ABS102

You have issues with what he sold you? Correct? It "whines" that tells me it's not correct or mis-installed! Catalogs tell me it's the wrong part! I used two catalogs and changed the GM part number in another and everything says that you need what I gave you!

Here's the catalog give it a try!

http://www.bwdbrand.com/Online%20%20...g/Content.aspx

Use the drop downs and then use the number cross reference. Your car is a '94 with an A4 correct?

I believe I just used the catalog O'reilly uses and it says they're correct but I'll wager it's a catalog error!

Under compatibility both parts are for the same car (1994 base vette vin P). The pics are the same. I need to look at both parts in person and compare them to the original. Thanks for all your help on this. I really appreciate it!

BWD doesn't seem to be the only ones with catalog confusion with this, if you use the BWD information in other branding you get multiple choice answers also. Does the speedometer register correctly and is steady NOT erratic? If it is maybe just bring yours out a bit and go for it but it's going to display some physical damage when you remove it so I'd use that as the grounds for a warranty return and exchange it! Which one from BWD is correct? WAG!

I spoke with the local chevy dealer and there are like 4 different part numbers. He asked for the VIN. Apparently there are similar parts but somehow different. The Speed is steady it just whines. I'm gonna remove it and exchange it.

So I took the new speed sensor out and compared it to the original. They look Identical. I measured them and they're the same. The difference must be internal. I will return it tomorrow and try the other one...

Look on the build sticker under your center console door and it will tell you what VSS your car needs. My 93 has code D8K which is a GM part #10456091 speed sensor (which are no longer made). While I was searching for a new VSS I did see most all of the other ones available. I wouldn't trust O'Reilly or any other chain. Get the AC/Delco part that is made for it.

If your VSS is no longer made try Raptor Transmission. My non-op speedometer ended up being fixed by replacing the wiring pigtail connector and the driven gear inside the VSS.

Good luck to you.

His is a 4L60E and he's doing well, his VSS is NOT a mechanically driven VSS with gears as your '93 is.

Well, I was impatient, and not wanting my car to be sittin' on jackstands til Tuesday, so I called around and found the ABS102 VSS at Advance Auto Parts. I bought it, installed it, and all is right in the world! The part is much better quality than the S8303 part. It is actually made in America! The metal retainer is much beefier and the O-ring is black like the original. It's so quiet now(the part not the car) I will try to load pics but I'm not sure how. Help?

Ok, I got the images uploaded. It compares the first part I bought, S8303 VSS, with the second one ABS102. The difference between the two are obvious. Look under the "Albums" tab to see, or under Guapo's 94. Thanks!

Thank You to WVZR-1 for your help! I appreciate it!

That's good that it worked out for you! I'd been a bit embarrassed had it NOT! It's good that you posted back with it "FIXED"!!
