Default Power steering pump problems

Thanks for all your help solving my problems fixing my clutch on my 1989 Corvette, but now I have a problem with my power steering pump. It is starting to make noise. I checked the reservoir and the fluid is real thick. Should I just begin by changing the fluid or go ahead and replace the pump. I guess I could take the pump off and replace the seals and bearing instead though. I am pretty sure that this is the original pump. What is your suggestion.

Do not attempt to remove or fit the pulley with anything other than a correct removal tool, see link below or hire one if you can.

A 3 jaw puller will damage the pulley buckle it and you will forever have a wobble, there have been so many posts on here looking for new pulleys and wondering why their new pump leaks when they have used a hammer to put the pulley on.

I did my power steering pump the correct way, after years of seeing power steering pulley posts and this tool made it an easy job.

siphon out the fluid, get the correct fluid, and try a change first. The fluid should be the consistency of transmission fluid. Advance Auto Parts' off-the-shelf fluid meets the recent GM spec for fluid for this car.

You may need to siphone, fill, drive a bit, siphon, and fill again. It's by far easier than a full drain and it may help. On the other hand a PO may have filled it with "molasses" to hide a leak. How long have you had the car?
