Default Radio Quit Working?

1994 corvette coupe. The radio was playing ok until I turned on the windshield defroster and all the sudden the radio went silent. It still changes channels and lights up but no sound. The antenna still works. I checked the 5amp fuse rdo/ign and it was ok. Maybe the relay is shot??? Where is the relay? Thanks in advance for any help on this matter. I appreciate any assistance. Steve

What year is the car? In the later 90's model the radio receiver is in the well behind the passenger seat. If yours is there, chances are that this has gotten wet over time and shorted out. Your only option would be a rebuilt receiver....no new ones anymore.

I never take it out in the rain and never wash it, just wax it. I do have an unheated garage that's located in an area of cold winter weather and alot of rain. Maybe the moisture from outside ruined it.

Open the rear hatch behind the passenger seat and check inside for signs of moisture. I just replaced the receiver in my friends 94 because of moisture getting to the receiver. Is there anyone near you that has a 94-95 that you could borrow their receiver and make a swap to see if that solves the problem.

That is what I did. We thought it was the radio in the dash. I pulled the receiver out of my 95 and traded. Her 94 radio worked without a problem on my receiver. We order a rebuilt and plugged it in. She is now happy that she has tunes again.

Tape or CD in the radio? If the tape or CD will play then more than likely it is the receiver.

Hey John, I really appreciate your time and information!!! I will take a look tomorrow and get back with you. Can you remember if her radio still had lights, accepted and ejected a cassette tape, tuner still moved up and down, selection buttons still functioned and lit up? The radio still functions but no sound. I will check for moisture tomorrow. How much did it cost to replace the receiver? Hey thanks once again, Steve

Radio tape would play and eject. Buttons worked...but no sound....just minor static. For awhile she would get a few AM stations and then nothing.

Cost was a couple of hundred thru a friend at a GM dealer. Gives Forum members and autocross'r discounts. I think you can find them thru other sources but they are not too common.
