I did several sets at home too. Stripping the clearcoat works pretty well with the chemical aircraft stripper, but if there is some corrosion under the clear or missing clear then that needs to be addressed and that is more difficult than the clear stripping and repainting. If the corrosion is very light it can be buffed to bring back the shine, but if it is more then it needs to be polished but that will loose the machine finish, or get it refinished to restore the original machine finish.
Once it is stripped, you can leave it unfinished and buff it a few times a year, or repaint the clear.
On mine, my wheels were basket cases with a lot of corrosion. I got both sets cheap. I stripped the clear and then tried to buff them to bring back the shine without removing the machine finish. I also sprayed them with clear. Mine are not anywhere near show quality, but I think they have an acceptable appearance now.
