Default 383 stroker

I'm doing a 383 stroker motor using an 89 L98 motor with aluminum heads. What cam can I use & can I use the ECM as is. I'm going to keep the stock compression ratio. Thanx in advance for your time

There are a lot of choices/options. too little info to reply.

Unless it's pretty radical, many/most reuse the stock ECM. Some do, however, upgrade from mid 80's to late 80s...or even MAP systems. (90-91).

Depends on your situation/goals.

But it will probably require a new tune to suit the combo

pick a cam that matches the flow ability of your head. IOW, where lift matches the roll-off point of the intake port flow. Don't worry about cams that make power above 5k rpms. Duration @ .050 no bigger than 220...and maybe as little as 211-212.

What are you going to use the car for, just cruising, street/strip, autocross, the Texas mile? Are emissions a factor. What about fuel economy? After you answer these questions, you'll get better cam choice answers.

using the motor in a street rod just for cruising. Fuel economy is a small issue but not critical. Thanx...jb

Since you're not jumping all over the details, should be assume it's stock heads, intake, etc...with only the addition of additional stroke? No head porting?

If you're investing in a 383 you should open up the air flow to take advantage of your gains. One thing will lead to another and you'll likely find yourself porting and replacing many items.

If you're thinking a new chip is a big obstacle you'll find it is among the cheapest of the parts you'd end up buying.

I am doing a 383 also (engine still in a shipping container) I spoke to quite a few people and started a similiar thread, settled on a Howards retro roller kit (85 engine),
500/510 lift (or 530/540 with 1.6 rockers)
225/231 duration (at .050)
112 Lobe separation,
Cant tell you how it works yet, but thats the result of my homework on the subject,
but like the guys above have said, it depends a lot on the mods above the block.

Howdy,
I have a Ed Wright Automotive Fastchip, he is one of the very few who do 85 computer chips, it made a big difference to mine, I will be sending it back soon to be reburnt due to the upgrades and new engine.
