this is only great because a normal downshift from 5th to 3rd from a 55 mph street to a 25 mph street IS in fact normal in my book.. i work at gm and i also work at bentley and rolls royce... i am a mechanic, i am not challenged and i know how to drive!! the low oil light went on in my DADS car while he was driving it.... i did all the gen. maint. at his house for him WHENEVER he asked.... so i wanted to go for a cruise with my buddy who lives closer to my dad.. he never said no and has a few fast cars for me to chose from... 03 cobra w/ 750 hp street legal (which i did all the work on for him minus the tune).. and 06 bmw m3 comp series hpf stage 2 kit... and other fun cars all which ive never "blown up" or even gotten tickets in... just wanted to go have a few drinks with my buddy... who i also work with who is a mechanic, was in the car when this freak of an accident happened the reason this is at some guys shop is because i am paying for it because i was driving it when it happened... i am not wealthy... i just started my career a little under 2 years ago, and my father does not trust me to fix it... i know it was 3rd gear bcuz as soon as i shifted, flames went into burst and the car died instantly in the middle of the street... i had water in the car so i used that to put the flame out... when i got back in the car I MADE SURE I DIDNT THROW IT INTO FIRST! totally reitterating the fact that im not a dumb driver.. then i have to tell my dad what happens and of course this was his favorite F#$#ING CAR.. then a few weeks goes by and he calls me and says... "ya know, the low oil light was on for about 3 weeks and i never said anything to you and it went off about 2 days before you came over and i forgot to say something to you. you think that might have something to do with it?" what do you think i said to that... im pissed that i have to pay for this as it is... i dont need people coming at me saying im a liar and to admit some b.s when you dont even know the story
At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter "how" it happened. Regardless of what you say, people will believe what they want to believe, so what? You know the truth, whether it is as you say is irrelevant to this discussion. What is important is that you are willing to take responsibility and make things right, and that says alot.
That said, if this is a Grand Sport as in blue with the white stripe and special vin, and if it is your dad's favorite car, then, if you're going to do this, do it right. Go through craigslist, e-bay, this forum, where ever you can, and find a good four bolt LTx block. Now, there are some significant differences in bottom end parts between the LT1 and the LT4. So make sure the parts you have are the correct ones. Also, if you or your dad do not already have one, get the FSM for the '96. But whatever you do, don't cheap out and duct tape and glue the engine together (so to speak).
It is an original gs #441 and he's already pissed its not gonna be completely original... and I don't want to glue it together I just want to take control of thiz zo he can get his cqr back hea yad it with this dood for over a year already...
Can't you just use an LT1 block? You could have it converted to 4 bolt if that is a problem.
All of the vette LT1s are 4bolt from the factory
If you work at GM it should be easy enough to have repaired this to where even the experts wouldn't know anything happened..... before you posted on internet where now its out there for ever.

Well, you did say that it's at this shop, or with this guy because you're not wealthy. Well, I'm afraid you're caught up in that old saying, "you get what you pay for." Now you can see the reason this guy is cheap.
Time to find a reputable Corvette mechanic, get a flatbed to take the car to the new mechanic, and pay your dues. Or, better yet, ask your dad how he wants this handled, because, after all, it is his rare collector car.

Cliff notes;
You work for GM
You're a mechanic but can't find an LTx block
You beat the crap out of your dad's cars
You can't drive a standard shift without blowing an engine
You drink and drive
I looked in the for sale section here and found you an LT4 engine with 1,000 miles on it, looks like you've been in the wrong section the whole time.
You've just got to love n00bs and their imaginations.
LOL i also said i just started my career too... and yeah... building a car and "adding on" is a lot easier then taking out figuring whats wrong and fixing.... i came here for a little advice on what to do... i do not have much experience and im not looking for a bunch of ****s sitting in front of a computer with nothing better to do then bash some kid whose TRYING to fix his dads car....
I work at steve foley cadillac in northbrook illinois... its a bentley and rolls dealer also.... just cuz i work here doesnt mean im the smartest person alive... but it does mean that i can ****in drive or i wouldnt be allowed to drive cars that cost more than your house....
as for my dads car... its at "some shop" because he sent it there after all this happened.... i have been telling him and telling him this guy doesnt know what the **** hes doing since he brought it here... my dad believed he could do it... until a year passes and every body in my family is asking him where the car is..
my dad lives in florida and just recently moved there... when he moved.... i decided to get this ball rolling myself after he moved... i dont know if he still doesnt trust me to fix it because its been over a year since i even asked...
hello.... i have a 96 GS Corvette.... love the thing... last year i was driving it home.... did a normal downshift to get ready to turn onto my street.... as soon as i downshifted.... pistons shot out of the oil pan and the car went into flames.... i was able to put the fire out and save the wiring harness... but as for the bottom half of my lt4, not so much.... in the past year i have had this guy putting it back together for me but i have a feeling he is jerking me around... about 2 weeks ago i got on the phone with this guy a little disgruntled on what is taking so long with my baby... long story short there is still a crack in the bottom half of the block and now they tell me i need a new bottom half.... only problem is, there is not a block available in the entire country!!! i am looking for a suggestion on what to do basically... i have a guy that can fix the block, for a steep price of 4100. but is there any motors i can put in that will have equivelent or more power to the original lt4... will a ls1 or ls3 fit up to the trans already in the car??? PLEASE HELP

there are a zillion LT blocks out there; just make sure you get one with the 4.00 inch bore; I scored one off Craigs list out of a Z28 for $75.00; granted it's a two bolt main, but a two bolt main, especially with aftermarket studs, is plenty strong enough for any but the most extreme builds. Or, for $$$ convert it to a splayed cap four bolt main which is stronger than the factory four bolt blocks; rumor has it (which I tend to believe) that heavy duty trucks may have had 4 bolt mains

Here's one. I would go for it if I could right now. Probably the best you're going to find. GM Dealerships only look at other dealerships, so they won't find anything. Classifieds are going to be your route. Good luck.

You asked for advice on a block, just what the f*** more do you want? People are flaming you because every time someone offers up a suggestion you make an excuse, then to when called out, you defend yourself by changing your story. Whatever happened with the car is irrelevant really, you know what the truth is. Now, alot of us have been around the block once or twice. We know that it takes quite a bit to throw a piston through an oil pan. You want help, great, there are tons of people here that can and have helped you. But a little honesty and respect for our intelligence will take you alot further than deflective BS. So you had a few drinks and got a little wild with the ol' LT4 and threw a rod. Big deal, you're not the first on here to do that. You're doing the right thing by taking responsibility for it, and I respect you for that. Now, take some of the suggestions you've gotten and go get you a LTx block and get this thing done already. Good luck man.
if it shoots out the pan... and theres a fire on top... sorry your a ****in retard its not oil... its just a smithering part

And with that...if I were a bettin man, I would say that we could scratch GS #441 off the list of cars in existence today. This one's never gettin fixed at this rate. Too bad really.

A few of us have pointed you in the direction of a low mile LT4 block for sale here on the forum, have you purchased it yet? You asked for advice and we gave it. As far as driving cars that are worth more than my house.....I can think of one GS you won't be driving anytime soon.
