My very attentive neighbor backed into the wifes 89 Vert last week, not too bad, just some paint cracking, but while the car was going to be repaired I asked my body guy about shooting tho whole car. The paint is original and getting a little tired. He told me that the entire car would have to be hand stripped to the gel coat and then repainted. I know some of you have repainted yours, what did you do and around how much did it cost ?
No need to strip to glass except where you have the paint cracking. The original paint is a good base - unless the car has been repainted multiple times. You do need to sand off any dead paint such as clearcoat in problem areas, and then primer well. Striping can cost a lot of money and cause a lot of problems.

Lots of work. Expect at least 4-5k not counting any damage repair
A good paint shop can sand the original finish to provide a good base for allowing a primer/sealer to adhere and then follow that with a good primer and then paint. C4's are a basecoat/clearcoat finish so the actual painting is a two-step process.
Either your "body guy" doesn't know much about painting Corvettes or he wants to make as much money as he can from your repaint. Can't hurt to talk to other paint shops. And not MAACO
As for costs, a decent paint job in the same color can run anywhere from $3K to as much as $12K or more. It depends on the degree and quality of the prep work, the experience level of the guy shooting the paint, and the quality of the paint itself.
