Default First Problem,89 C4

I haven't had my car long, but have been driving it a good bit..It really seems to run good....My problem started yesterday while running down the interstate my engine lite came on..I really don't know when it happened..I just looked and it was on..Oil pressure, and water temp were fine..After visiting the inlaws we left for home the lite was gone, but came back on at some point on the interstate. We got off our exit and got a bite to eat.The lite was off again,But a the red lites it was wanting to run around 225 degrees. It wasn't really a warm day ,But I chalked it up to the fact that I had ran a good while on the interstate...The car ran fine all day..The only thing I did differently than any other day I drove it was fill it up with 93 octane and I did use cruise control some, just to see how it worked.....Well today I went to town and it wanted to run hot again at long lites,It was getting really close to 230..After I came home I kept it in drive till the fan came on at 230,Then the temp started backing down..I could understand this if it was in the summer, but it's not. The engine lite never did come back on today, but I wanted to see what it was. After being home for a few hours I took my paper clip to retrieve the codes, and it made my fan run as I checked the codes. It flashed code 32,for egr..The engine was completely cool at the time......Any help would be appreciated..

230 temp is normal in stop and go traffic with stock cooling system. For the code 32 and light, check you egr temp switch. Do a search on this board, it has been discussed in depth.

Thank You Corvette40....I have read that they run pretty hot,but I never noticed mine trying to get that hot till yesterday..I wonder why my cooling fan ran while pulling my codes?.The motor was cool to the touch at the time.

As stated those temps are normal & my fan also comes on whenever I pull codes. As for the code 32. Check the little pig tail wire on the sensor. When mine came off it would set a code.

Thanks Gunner,....It just had me a little concerned...After all an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure....I guess having just said that: I need to clean my radiator from time to time like I've read here on this forum...Does anyone know if I can just take the top part of the shroud off, leaving the hoses, and transmission lines hooked up,and clean it while still in the car?....

taking the shroud off is the hardest part, if you do that you should just finish it off its just 2 hoses and 2 trans lines and it should slide right out. when i took mine out i found bolts, screws, news papers, and cigarettes. my old radiator was fully covert with what looked like animal hair, if i wasnt mistaken i would think my car ate a couple of those missing dogs in my neighborhood.

could be an EGR problem. take it to one of the parts stores and pull the code. if it is in fact a egr code...if the light comes on quickly after starting it is the egr solenoid. if it comes on after a few miles of driving it is the egr valve. i must give the credit for this knowledge to this forum, these guys are good.

I had a cracked vacuum line that goes to the EGR solenoid that set that code on my 89.

230 is said to be normal but mine never went over 226 degrees on a 90 degree day factory so this seems a little high for the weather. May want to do a coolant flush. a quick tip to get the temp down if you are handy with a wrench is to replace the intake manifold gasket with a Felpro 1204 I believe. This has the rear coolant passages completely open and not 60% blocked like the factory did for emissions. Mine dropped to just about 200 degrees on a 90 degree day.

My car now barely hits 190 on a hot summer day with a Dewitt's Aluminum rad addition. Something to think about.

Drawback is car take longer to heat up but I don't drive mine in the winter

Thanks Red...Thanks Tommy..I think I've picked up something on my radiator. I can shine a lite thru the holes on the shroud where the lines for the AC condenser go and can just barely see some old brown leaves, and something white in there,I'de say I picked up the white thing friday when I went to Kanawha City....We've got a few days of bad weather so I'll be cleaning it out day after tomorrow.
