Default Difficult??

I have an 84. I would like to change when the for lights work. Currently, they only work when teh headlights are actually on, not even with the parking lights. I would like to change it to being able to turn them on anytime the car is running and, in case i forget, they will go off when i turn the ignition off. How hard would this be to do. I guess the hardest part is getting behind the dash. An ignition hot lead should be pretty easy to find.

I don't know about an 84 but my 92 fog lights can be turned on then parking lights or headlights on. Maybe someone with an 84 will chime in and let you know what their cars do. You could always run a separate power source, switch, and relay to your fog lights and turn them on independently.

I would think you'll only "forget" one time to turn them off unless you're a very slow learner. The first time you "kill" the battery should suffice for "lesson learned". I can't imagine why you would want to default to an "engine run" enviroment.

The generally accepted modification is for fogs to be operational when the parks are on. Just my thoughts!

I've contemplated something similar to this. It's convenient to be able to flash your lights at someone.

I haven't looked into the wiring yet, but I was going to look into something complicated like having the high beam arm flash the fog lights when the lights are off.

From everything I remember reading about this, the '84 Fog lights do require the head lights to be on.

To have them work separately you would need to find where the yellow wire joins the one from the head light switch and find an ignition circuit wire to attach it to, lots of fun in the dash..

WHy wait for the one hard lesson?? If I wire it so the lights only work whent he car is running, then no headache. I dont need the parking lights on with them. I guess its "accepted" because this was the change made by the factory???? I would still use the switch to turn them on/off while running as needed. Thanks for the help.

It might not be very difficult at all. Remove the connector from the fog light switch and release the terminal (yellow) so that the wire can be removed and taped off. Take another terminal and appropriate colored wire and insert into the switch and run it to the ignition source that you'd like to use. You could then power up the fogs at will and they would power down when the car is shut down. You wouldn't defeat any of the lighting functions other than fogs. I would certainly "fuse it"!!
