Unknown part in -87

I was going to change rear bulbs and I took the registration plate out. And I discovered this thing. Nobody knows what this is? It has some power connections too. Can it be fuel pump?

Somebody added a backup fuel pump to the car. Probably couldn't figure out how to replace the stock one. Hee Hee.
I'd check the stock unit and take this one out.

More likely that is the main pump now

Clean installation? Really? Come on. Lets add another filter and give the guy a stick to measure the fuel, too.

At least it solves the problem of where to mount a external pump on a C4 where it is safe and out of the way ;
not to mention easily accessible

Yes, gas gauge works. Principally I don't like these kind of modifications. Keep it simple is better. I have to take out fuel tank sending unit and see what's wrong with it. I quess there's something wrong with it. Hopefully it's only the pump.
So, I'm planning to take out that extra pump because now it's quite interesting to change the rear bulbs now.

except for the fuel spewing out of the broken lines with a minor bump in the back
