You really need to give more info,Were your dash lites coming on with the key,or was every thing dead, could be a bad or loose cable going to your starteror solinoid. Is your starter shielded from heat, and oil leaks?.If it's a standard it could even be the clutch pedal switch .I'm sure sombody here can figure it out.
I have power to everything. its a auto. there is no heat shield on the starter. it started right up in the morning and drove it maybe 3 blocks from the house.so I don't think it could be cause the heat. when I turn the key its like dead. let off key I have power.

check your battery cables and clean them dip them in pepsi.
I would begin with checking all the wires/cables to make sure they are in good condition and tight. If they are, I would pull the starter and have it tested. Sometimes new parts have an issue.
If you have power, the battery isn't the issue, but the starter or cap/rotor could be.
With the common pellet in the key not being read correctly problem seeing it started up fine later on
(which takes out a battery / cable / NS switch /starter problems)

Clean key with alcohol. Leave it wet and insert/remove from the ignition lock several times rapidly. Sometimes this removes the crud and allows everything to work fine. The VATS system also has a timer on it which will not allow the car to start for a period of time (15 min - can't remember). This kicks in if the system senses it has been tampered with.
If this continues then you might need a new lock cylinder and key. If you go that route you must have your key's chip read first so you can get a replacement set that matches your current key's code.
If that does not help then post up again as there are other ways around it.
There was a recall on the ignition switches for '86. The contacts were changed. I did the upgrade and the new switch came with new keys (longer than the old ones). This was a LONG time ago, so good luck with that.
This is just grabbing at straws, but it could possibly be your shifter position,Don't put much pressure on it but shove up a little bit on it and try it ,or try starting it in neutral....Have you tried turning the key on,opening the hood, and sparking the solinoid?
