I've been trying to pin point a loud ticking in my 95. Using the screw driver method, I did find that 1 or 2 of my lifters are a little noisey but nothing serious. I also don't think that I have any exhaust leaks. Anyway - I hear the ticking on the passenger side of the engine but it is loudest when I listen below the engine and stick my head under the car. It does click faster as I give it more acceleration. Any ideas ?
"If you have lifter noise that doesn't go away when the engine warms up you might have a more serious problem. This could be a sign that the oil level is too low to build adequate pressure to allow the lifters to operate properly. Check the oil level and fill if necessary.
If the oil level is adequate and the noise continues the problem is more serious. This could indicate blocked oil passages, failing lifters or a failing oil pump. An experienced mechanic can perform further troubleshooting to better identify these issues."

another guy here on the forum had a similar issue and it turned out to be a loose spark plug. i never would have thought that a loose plug could cause a ticking sound but the guy tightened it and the ticking went away. its worth a look into before you delve into any mechanical repair of the valves, valve springs, rockers, lifters or push rods.
