I bought a '95 C4 about two months ago. I love the car, I hate the tires. They are so noisy. The present rubber is Goodyear. Looking for input / ideas what others like on their C4. Thanks
I have Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires and like the ride and the low noise level. I've never driven in rain or snow with them so I can't comment on those qualities.
I would also recommend Nitto 555s as a bit more of a performance oriented tire. They also have a great and quiet ride.
Not much between you and the tire, just a piece off plastic.
Ain't that the truth. We used to alternate driving between my Grand Cherokee with mud tires and the MB S600, and it was like climbing into a bubble of silent bliss with sealed vault doors. Best car I have ever had.
Since I drive the Vette in all weather I need dry/wet/snow traction and my prior GY Eagle HP Ultra Plus filled the bill VERY well. Unfortunately GY no longer makes them.
I put Sumitomos on the IROC-Z and had great snow traction the 1st year but not so good last year.
My current Vette came with Hancock all weathers and they have great wet & snow traction but haven't had them to the strip to test dry traction. If they give the track hook of the prior GYs I'll stay with them.
Try the Nexen N3000
They are very cheap but they grip better than tires worth 3 times as much, excellent dry and wet grip much better than my previous Hankook ventus sport tires or sumitomo tires that were just awful no grip at all.
Nitto 555 on ZR 1 wheels, 17 x 11 rear 315 35 15 17 x 9.5 front 275 40 17
Have about 5,000 mile, they ride nice, quiet, and handle well. I hear wear is good from others. Not to expensive.
Nitto 555 here too...got them at all places Walmart, just couldn't beat the price and mounting fees (and the fact Walmart is 2 miles from house verses 15 to the nearest tires store). Fortunately my Walmart has 1/2 clue on mounting tires of this size; they did a great job, so YMMV at other Walmarts.
We just picked up a cheap '96 coupe (base model) that spent many years in the southwest. The front tires are newer Kuhmo Ecsta SPT and the rear are older dry-rotted Bridgestones. We've been looking at the Nitto NT 555, Conti ExtremeContact DW, or the same Kuhmo's to replace the rear. They're all about the same price point.
I was thinking about the Nitto tires and I'm glad to see a lot of positive input here on them. Is there any advantage to having the Kuhmo's with same tread pattern on the rear instead?
I noticed some mentions of the Nitto's performing well in the wet. Anyone have any insight into the others in the wet. I'm more focused on hydro-planning resistance than overall wet performance. I loathe hydro-planning!
This car puts our '76 L-82 to shame on the highway when it comes to steering and mileage. So we plan on doing some long trips that could leave us occasionally caught by a rainstorm. I'd consider the Michelin Pilot all-season, but at double the price, I'd rather save the money to put into better suspension/steering components (that'll be a seperate post).
Best of everything - Michelin Pilot Sport AS or Pilot Sport PS2. But you must be aware that these tires won't be made much longer and I don't think they will make it in the rear size for their replacements.
Best dry grip for the money - Nitto NT05. Put them on my own '92 a month ago and autocrossed them for the first time last Sunday. Incredible grip! Between the new Koni shocks and larger front sway bar, my lap times were 3-4 seconds better than they were before, and jumped 33 places in PAX time(from 66th to 33rd) and 25 places in raw time. They can be a bit sketchy in rain. They probably won't last an awful long time but no more than I drive it, that is fine with me. I'm absolutely THRILLED with them at this point. So far no ride issues up to 110 mph. Haven't gone faster than that yet.
Worst tire no matter the money - Nexen N3000. I took these off to install the Nittos. Still had 80% tread left. Vibrated like crazy even after road force balancing. Terrible dry/wet grip in autocross and track events. Another guy running the same size 275/40R17 on his Camaro SS had all the same problems I did with this tire. They don't make much noise, but that's the only thing good I will say about them.
Best all around for the money - Nitto 555. I have no personal experience with them but the other guys on the forum seem to like them.
I help run a tire shop, so I've seen and heard a lot. For the sake of your car, please don't go with the Nexens or have your tires mounted at Wal-Mart, ESPECIALLY if you have the low tire pressure warning system in your wheels.
I'll chime in.. I have just purchased a set of Bridgestone re760 sport tires and so far I am really liking them. They are competitively priced and are available for both 17's and 18's if that is the case. I replaced some hankook 255's In the front with the 275 bridgestone's. Then in back, I ordered a new 18x9.5 and went with 295/18 wheel/tire combo. I liked the fact that I could match front and back tires. I know this can be done with the nittos as well, I just think the bridgestone's are a really good looking tire with the rounded edges and tread lines.

I totally forgot about these tires, and I'm a Bridgestone dealer for god's sake. These would be good tires too. I do not know how much longer they will be in production, though, as Bridgestone recently introduced the new Potenza S-04 that could potentially replace them. They haven't mentioned discontinuing them yet but they rarely announce it until it's already been done.
