I replaced my Bilstein shocks on my 85 vette with KYB last year and can tell no difference in handling or ride. If you have lots of money go with the Bilstein - but don't think they are worth more than twice the price.
I replaced mine with the Koni yellow single adjustable shocks. I didn't think that the Bilstein's were worth the massive price. I would certainly buy the Koni's again.

How do you know you need shocks? When you go over train tracks your teeth loosen? The car is 23 years old and is a little flexible anyway!

That's a pretty good sign. When you hit a bump and it feels like there is no dampening happening. When I pulled my old Bilsteins, w/ a little over 140K, I could compress them quite easily by hand, and the rebound was very slow. So they were essentially bottomed out all the time. Replaced with Bilsteins Z51's and very pleased thus far. The Bilsteins were around $350 for the set from Wilcox, IIRC.
I knew that I needed shocks because when I went head gradual bumps the entire car would bottom out. Ya it did a number on my back at times and when I upgraded to the grand sport wheels they rubbed on all four corners when the car bottomed out. I actually cracked the rear passenger fender about a week before the new Koni's arrived. The rubbing is probably because the wheels were not the correct offset and stick out a bit but the shocks have something to do with it also. After new shocks and a new rear spring I dont bottom out anymore or rub. I still need a front spring but that is a slightly more complicated piece to replace so I have been putting it off.
Also several of the original shocks leaked, you could see the bottom half covered in the dried fluid. They were so worn that I could easily compress them fully by hand and I am not a big guy. With the new Koni's that was impossible to do.

VERY good choice for C4's. Koni's are awesome shocks.
