Yet Another Bose replacement question (please read)
Hi,
I am haveing the Bose system removed and installing a new system this week. Is the following accrurate on a 91 vert with the bose gold (crap)system:
1)The replacement front speakers will be 4"
2)The replacement rear speakers will be 6X9"
and most importantly, do i need to pay to have them run new speaker wire or can i keep the old wire and have them use that (I hope).
Please let me know what you guys know and also what you think i should put in it for a reasonable amount <500 bucks.
Re: Yet Another Bose replacement question (robertpel9)
Just posed to your other post. The front you can use 5 1/4" speakers if you work them a little. I'd get a set of coax, maybe infinity reference.
The rear is 6x9s but you may need to put a board across the opening and cut a hole for the speaker in it to make them fit. Pretty basic. Run your own speaker wires. The stock ones stink and they are grouped together with the bose crap through the amps. Use 14 gauge speaker wire. Should be pretty easy. The hardest part of the install is getting the deck in. First, install the speakers. Then run the wires from the locations to the dash. Then do the deck. If you have any questions, just post.
Re: Yet Another Bose replacement question (92TripleBlack)
Your last post said $300. For $500 I would upgrade to Boston Acoustics RX series speakers. They will sound much better than the Infinities and make the pioneers sound like elevator speakers. http://www.tms-electronics.com has them. You can get both sets and a Pioneer 4300 as well as the power harnes and dash kit for under $500 and it will sound great.
Decks can be found on http://www.pricegrabber.com and http://www.mmxpress.com for example.
Re: Yet Another Bose replacement question (92TripleBlack)
Thanks for the input. I am good under the hood but i have little faith in installing a stereo and am not gonna risk screwing it up. So i have to pay to have it installed. What speaker sizes will fit right in the old Bose spots so i don't get raped on installation charges??
Re: Yet Another Bose replacement question (robertpel9)
Install your own stuff, dude. It'll save you a BUNCH of money, and it's rather easy. If nothing else, install your own speakers. Simply remove cover, take off screws, pull wire off of back, put wire on new one, screw it in, and put cover back on. It takes about 10 minutes to do two if it's your first time. As for the speaker wire. PLEASE upgrade the factory speaker wire. It is more than likely very thin, probably 18 guage or so. That is bad. The thicker the wire, the better they sound and cleaner they sound. Upgrade so something like 12 guage. It's amazing what speaker wire changes can do. You don't HAVE to, but if you want performance from your system, one of the weakest links in any factory stereo setup is the wiring. Hope this helps.
Re: Yet Another Bose replacement question (robertpel9)
if you want to install it yourself and go shopping at any McElectronics or McStereo (best buy / circuit city / etc) who offer "free" install, they might knock a few bucks off for the "self install discount." i personally did this at circuit city, but do not know about the others for experience. saved, i think 30-50 bucks.
as for my experience, it was worth a week of dismantling and reassembling my interior to get to know my vette better. there are plenty of experienced Forum members here who will give you tips that may save you a bit of headache. (factory GM manuals are a big help too!!!)
