There is a thin spring in the buttons and they do break after time!
You'll have to buy a new button that has the spring included with the package!

MAM catalog lists the following related part; now sure what differs in '96?
603-198: 1984-1995 Console Lid Spring: $7.99

I just checked their web site and that part is listed for 1984-1996 Corvette???
Might be worth a call to them.

Same thing happened to me. The spring popped out and I never found it. Still haven't found a solution to this. I don't feel like paying 30 buck shipping for a 7 buck spring.

On my prior '88 that spring broke just after I got the car and I didn't know I could buy anther one so I MacGyvered it.

I removed the lid and then the inside plate to expose the button & broken spring. I found a small ball-point pen spring, cut it to length and inserted behind the button. That "fix" lasted for >12yrs of ownership...

Buy a used door assembly from flea bay or a parts yard.
There maybe other parts that you need when your working on this..

Thanks that's exactly the type of solution I was thinking about for my button when I get around to it.
