I have 400 miles till I'm due for my next change. Tomorrow I have to take a 500 mile trip and return on THursday, putting me about 600 miles over my 3000 mile interval. What would you do?
Well, if you are using Mobil 1, you can safely go more than 3000 miles between oil changes. Oil has changed so much in the last 20 years, that the 3000 mile interval is really outdated. The only reason that oil change places keep writing down the 3000 miles on the little oil change reminder is to get you to come in more often so they make more money. New cars these days usually say somewhere between 5000 and 7000 miles between oil changes, and that's on conventional oil. So don't be worried about going 3600 miles between oil changes.
Regardless of what oil you are using, if you have time to change it before you go, change it. But if you don't have the time then don't worry about it, change it when you get back.

I'm faced witht the same problem. I went ahead and got the oil change. I also had them check all fluid levels, tire pressure, etc because I'm going on a trip. Gives you peace of mind before leaving.
Thanks for the feedback  ***EDIT***
Was going to wait, but just went to the store and I'm w/in 300 miles and the change oil ight is on so going to do it:yesnod:
3K is way way way too excessive if you are using Mobil 1 Synthetic. The change oil light is there for a reason. It is not just based on milage, but oil temperature and bunch other algorithyms that were explain to me once, but much too complicate to recite now.
My brother has been a mechanic for 35 years. He tells me that with synthetic you can easily go 7,000 between oil changes. I still do it fairly close to 3,000. Guess it's just habit! :D
