Default New AC system

Just paid $900.00 for a "NEW" complete AC system for 1990 basic model. Did I get taken?

I would venture to say yes, I bought an extremely nice 97 firebird with ice cold air, downside 3.8 with a 5 speed for 1,000 so yep if you paid 900 just to fix a/c I say you got taken.

If you got new, probably not. Those AC parts are expensive, especially if you got labor too.

91 A/C compressor is almost $500 bones. What did they replace? All new would mean compressor, lines, accumulator, condenser, evaporator and Freon. That for 900 is a steal.

Assuming it was swapped over to R-134, with new parts, that is a real steal.

No, I sent it to:
R&Y Compressors
15315 NE 21st Ave
North Miami Beach, FL 33162

The clutch on the compressor was shot, not even there...just the pulley. They replaced o-rings, new R12 compatible oil, and new clutch.

Owning any older car is expensive unless you are handy and have thousands of dollars of tools and a lift. Many of us have gone that route but I am not sure that is economically justified, just worth if for the satisfaction of doing it yourself. And AC work requires some additional tools that you might not have even after spending 10-20k to outfit a garage.

If you want to sit in your car and enjoy it rather than work on it, that seems like a good price.

That's a very fair price IMO. Lot's of work, test equipment etc. A cool driver is a happy driver especially in Miami. Hot hot hot and very humid.

I would pay that to enjoy my car through the summer. Putting up with some these idiot drivers is hard enough with A/C and with out it things would get crazy very quickly.

It's all relative.

I think you did fine

I put 700 in on mine when i finished it last month. New compressor accumulator orifice tube. 3 cans of r-134 and some oil. A vaccum pump and A/C manifold is included in that cost and I did the work myself. It is real cold in my car now.
