Default 1990 Rear Radio Speakers

I have a 1990 and the rear amps are shot. The radio store says I need to replace the radio with a built-in amp but non or the radios are the same size as my original. They are half the size and the lower part has a kit that installs and it looks awful.

Any one know someone who has amps for the rear of a 1990 Corvette Conv?

90 radio size is double din.

Check @ Crutchfield, many styles to choose from.

I have a kenwood in my 90 with the install kit that has a cubby hole under the radio and I like it. Place for the phone and I-pod.

Kenwood DDN770HD fits like a glove and has every feature you can imagine.

If you want to stay original and save money, there are a few posts here on repairing the amps. You might want to give that a try.

You might check with Vette2Vette for a price on used amps or perhaps the entire "box" (enclosure, amp & speaker).

Do you have any interior pix that show it in daylight?

Thats what i just finished doing. Found the how to here on our forum and the capacitors at radio shack. Easy enough job and now i have 4 working speakers. Good for the time being but i will be getting something new down the road. Took about 30 mins per amp and cost under 30$ for all the parts.

To Davehtt. I cannot find anything on the forum about fixing my amps in the rear of my 90 conv. Where did you find this?

To others that have a Kenwood in their car. Does it have its' own amplifier? Did you have to rewire the radio to work?

Here is a post on repairing the amp for a '88. I think the repair is similar for the '92.

If you install an aftermarket head unit, you can buy a wiring harness from Crutchfield that will allow you to use your existing speakers. However, there is also another device you will have to buy and install that prevents the really loud and annyoying "POP" from the speakers whenever you turn on the stereo.

In lieu of that, you can buy speakers that fit the enclosures and wire them directly to the head unit using the speaker outputs. You don't have to add an amp, but if you want high quality sound, the amp is the way to go. Most head units will have both speaker and pre-amp outputs. So you can make that decision after you purchase the unit. I went the "no amp" route with plans to eventually install amps and subs.

I had my 1996 Bose head unit rebuilt by Dr Dons with the aux input conversion of the cassette. Took a week to ship to them, fix, and to receive back to Iowa...excellent work by them, I highly recommend their work if you want to stay stock.

miker2: Do you still have the 2 amps? Who rebuilt them? Will they work in the rear of my 1990 conv?

miker2: Thank you for the response. Do you know the amount of amps they put out? I need to know that they will work in the 1990 conv. in the rear. It appears that you have a coupe.
