Hi, I have a mirror mystery. My 93 vert was exported new to Japan, from there to UK in 2006. I have searched Google Images, but have seen curvy original mirrors only.
I suspect a previous owner damaged a mirror, and put these on to save money and hassle. Do you agree? If so, any idea what they're from? They're kind of ugly, aren't they?
My other thought was that they might have been for the Japanese market only - just a thought....
I looked up the British Corvette UK site and one guy posted a picture of the Corvette Nationals. If you look at the picture below, you really can't tell which Corvettes were bought from Americans and which were imported from the U.S. but the Red with black mirrors seems to have the same mirrors as yours. That might be the only one in the photo that was made for the European market.
On a side note. I had my Vette over in England for 3 years. Joined the local Corvette club which went to the Nationals at some castle in the south. There were 700 entries in the show and I took First Place in the C4 division.
these mirrors are the export design and are original to your car, most imported vettes have the fixed mirror, which on a single vehicle accreditation (SVA) test are acceptable, however for a vehicle formally exported the folding mirror design was required to pass the more stringent testing for type approval.
In Japan the width of the mirrors can put you into a higher vehicle tax. Ever see the fender mirrors like on Japanese 240Z, there inside the body line. If they fold inward even an inch could make a difference. Not sure about the UK but those are the same ones on the Wheeler Dealer vette
Thanks all. That makes sense. As the car originally went to Japan, the market probably demanded folding mirrors. I may swap them at some stage and fit wind deflectors, because the buffeting becomes too much above about 30mph!!
Thanks again.
