Over heating problem
Now, it could be a few things. First question is what temps are you getting to? and is the coolant boiling?
I ask this because many new LT1 owners look at the analoge gauge and freak out when it appears to be near the overheat mark. The gauge to look at is the digital display on the instrument cluster. This is the more accurate. If it is 230-231 at it's highest point, you're okay, this is normal for the LT1 in stop and go traffic.
If it's going higher, then there is trouble. My first suggestion, in seeing that you had recently done repairs to the system, especially a leak, is that you have air in the system. Do a search and you will see this is a pretty simple proceedure to fix.

Unlikely seeing the only thing he played with was the core and he makes no mention of any previous cooling problem
As previously stated , more likely to still have air in the system
I'll let you know how it turns out, thanks again.
