So, I was driving on the highway Sunday (1994 lt1 with automatic transmission, stock 133k on the odometer) and let off the gas since there was a red light ahead. As soon as the rpms started to drop the whole car started to shake. No codes, no smoke, no issues indicated by gauges. I did smell raw gas from the exhaust as well and the car shook and engine ran really badly through all rpm ranges since that time. I pulled the car into a local shop and they finally looked at the car. They are telling me the injector on the #6 cylinder is being commanded open by the ecm (I think they said ecm) and that the computer has gone bad. I am only slightly mechanically inclined and think this issue is probably out of my range to fix. Does this issue come out the blue where the ecm goes bad like this and this is a symptom? I am thinking of having the car towed to one of the corvette specialists for a second opinion and having the work done. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.
You may want to check the optispark. That same thing just happened on my 95 LT1. Wife took it to work and was running just fine. Came out to go home and it ran on 7 cylinders. By the time she got home it was running on 6 cylinders. Checked infectors first to see if they were the problem but they were okey. Took it to a shop and found out it was the optispark.
Well, just wanted to update the story. I had the Vette towed to the Vette specialist shop I use in South Jersey. They said the same thing as the local mechanic. The injector drivers went bad. I was told that the computer for the car is very hard to come by. So, they sent mine out to be rebuild. So, hopefully that is all that needs to be fixed at this point. It sucks having your car just sit for weeks during prime driving season!
As these cars get older, we are starting to see more computer problems. Years ago when the technology was new, the computer was always the first thing blamed and the last thing to actually be bad. Computers have proven to be so reliable, they are now often the last thing blamed. Good luck, and hopefully you can get back on the road again.
Well, I finally got my car back today According the shop, there is only one place that rebuilds these computers, and it is in Canada! It took close to 3 weeks for the computer to be rebuilt. So, if your computer goes I guess you can expect that as your downtime Well the car runs great again and just in time for Carlisle!
