Fuel Gage Question.
So just how accurate are these digital gages in a C4? My reserve light comes on at about 2-3 bars left, but the range button says i have over 100 miles. I did notice the reserve light going off depending on if i go up or down a hill. I dont want to push it, but it does have a 20 gal tank. I think my trip meter shows around 270 miles. I just havent had this car that long to really judge it.

Not very accurate at all! My 90 comes down one bar after I burn 6 gallons. I always keep mine full just incase. Running it out of fuel isn't good for it I heard.

I fill mine at 1/4 tank..I siphoned mine out and refilled it 1 gallon at a time, (to adj the level arm it was hanging against the inside of the tank) the lower bars were about a gallon each the upper bars 2-3 gallons each.

I just don't understand why some have to try and "push the limits" on any fuel gauge.
It costs the same to run around on a full tank of fuel as it does on an empty tank.
Once that fuel light comes on, you better be looking for a nearby gas station unless you like walking.

On another note your fuel pump needs the fuel to stay cool...

Funny how fuel pumps die when you have one or two bars left,
I have adjusted my fuel sender to show 0 bars and still have a couple of litres left, generally the fuel gauge is very accurate however if the connector plug does not have a good connection it can suddenly drop or rise without warning. I always reset the trip odometer and go via miles traveled i know what she will do on a highway, i tend to fill up when i have half or a quarter of a tank left.
(if you have a good roadside assistance policy well you can risk it), but being stuck on the side of a highway with high speed traffic is not on my like list there are so many sleepy, drugged, drunk drivers out there.

I always took his advice and so far, so good.

Today went to work, and when i was going down hill, gage went back up to 3 bars and reserve lite went off. On level it was 2 bars and reserve lite on. Filled up, took 17.626 gal. So as long as i hit the fuel station shortly after the lite comes on, i think i am ok.

You need to get the ratios correct.

I find it helpful to reset the "fuel" button on the dash at each fillup. It says to do this in the owners manual. My guage is much more accurate when I do this.

Agree with you. I have let my 96 LT4 sit for many months raised on the lift between driving trips. Last trip was couple months ago, fill it up and let it sit until the next trip. 45K on it driven like this since I bought it new. Have never used a gas treatment.

GM wasn't stupid and once your Gage hits Reserve, Range switches to Miles since Reserve. No one is going to predict how much further it can go and risk having you butt ended by some semi when it doesn't make it. Of course there may be an App or two that you can download to your Cell for better Accuracy on mileage and range and Delphi now offers a Standalone "OnSTar" which includes a ton of stuff including Diagnostics, but you'll need an OB2 system to adapt it.

Of course i do this. and reset the trip meter so i know the miles driven. Today, after driving with tank full, noticed the upper bars are thicker than the lower. Makes sense, more gas at top of the tank than lower. now just have to watch the bars and see if they change as it goes down.
