Default Project failure - lets talk.

Fellow C-4 guys, Today my buddy Ted and I attempted to install a sensor into the block to ground the fan relays and turn the on the fans at 200 degrees instead of 228 as the computer will do. We used pro tools but we could not break the plug loose were it should go. The plug is under the first spark plug on the drivers side of the car. After soaking the plug for two days it still did not come out when we worked on it. Murfies law showed up and we ruined the plug. My question is, can the sensor be installed somewhere else that is easier or, has any one had the computer programmed to turn the fans on sooner and make these damn cars run cooler in the summer when the air conditioner is on? Come on chime in. By the way I bought this kit from MAM.

What kind of wrenches were you using to try and remove the sensor? 12 point box, open end...other???? Since you have messed up the sensor, I would suggest that you use a 6 point socket (looks like a clay impression of the bolt head/sensor head) and a breaker bar. A 12 point will round off the edges of the sensor, same as a open end or similar wrench.

The new sensor should go in with Teflon tape on the threads or there should be a sealer on the threads.

I would prefer to have the computer re-programed to turn them on at a temp that I wanted. Most of your fans are a two stage fan set up. So you can program BOTH stages to come on earlier.

John, we did not mess up the sensor, we messed up the plug we were trying to remove and the fans had a jumper wire on them so they came on together. The sensor goes in without any tape on it because it is the ground that turns on the fans. I also would like to have the computer programmed to turn on the fans earlier. A couple of years ago I was at a cruise in Macungie, Pa. and another C-4 owner told me his computer was programmed to turn on the fans earlier but I forgot what he told me where the shop was. I should say that the sensor turns on the fans at 200 and turns them off at 185. That is what I would like to accomplish with my C-4. These cars just run too hot to suit me. Any advise is welcome

I just had my computer re-programed two weeks ago. They now come on at 190 and 210. I like this much better.

So you are not talking the screw in sensor itself, but the plug that attaches to the sensor. Is is like the knock sensor plug where you have to squeeze it to get if of or is it like the standard plugs with a plastic latch that holds it in place?

... Hide a toggle switch under the dash or wherever and run one wire off the switch to a good ground ... run the other side of the switch to the grounding wire for the engine cooling fan relay ( the sensor you bought from MAM will have instructions ) and voila ! you have absolute control over the fan turn on temps ... don't separate the wire for the relay , just tap into it and the computer will turn it on at 228 when you aren't paying attention ..............

I bought an in line hose adapter with bung from Summit. I installed it in the top radiator hose. Something like below but not sure of size. Measure hose ID first.

The manufacture of that switch suggests a 5/16" square piece of stock steel. I tried it and the plug would not budge...rounded it off. The 5/16" stock steel just twisted.
If I ever have to remove the head then I will deal with it. Not sure at this point if it can be removed with an easy out or not. The location is bad to get tools into that area.
I bought a chip on ebay that was programmed to turn the fan on at a lower temp.

Yeah, that plug has a 5/16 square hole in it for removal. We used a breaker bar and brute strength and it would not budge, we rounded off the square hole. I am so pissed because I am so fussy with my Vette. Now, please tell me more about this chip that would lower the temp that the fans come on. We also discussed installing the toggle switch to turn on the fans and that is a option although I like the way the sensor would turn the fans on at 200 and off at 185. Come on fellas keep chiming in with advice. Corvette 40, thanks for that information, that is another option. I printed out that paper for future consideration.

I have an old army buddy that lives in Allentown, near Cedar St. (?) and US-22. He is an x vette owner ( 1965 vert) and an x dealer mechanic. Agent orange has taken a few bites out of him but he may still help out.. you gotta ask. His name is Tony Ionno. Tell him Fred mentioned his name. He is a pretty good guy and I stop in and see him when I go thru there (am semi driver)

Had that issue on my 1990, weld a grade A bolt in where the rounded hole is. That will get the plug super hot so have tools ready and it will come right out.

I think he means a "grade 8 bolt", that is a hardened steel bolt. We used them at Mack Trucks. Tough as hell bolt.
