Default Spark plug wire question

Hello all..1987 Corvette coupe auto.
I noticed that some corvettes have the passenger side spark plug wires wrapped in what looks like black tape. I am sure because of the closeness to excessive heat areas. Is this just electrical type or is there a thermal type tape to protect it? And if so where can it be purchased? I would like to protect mine since I burned one a bit. The one that got burned doesn't look like it damaged anything past the outer casing. Could there be internal damage to the wire? I am chasing a slight miss.

Thanks for any help

Kevin

if the casing was burned through you can expect arching and a miss. I would replace the wire set and use the factory wire holders or at the very least, zip ties to secure the wires away from the exhaust.

Thanks for the quick reply. I was afraid so. The wires are only a year old but one I'd burn. Ill have to get the wire holders as they are missing.

Thanks agin

Even though the damaged part is taped up? Will it still create a miss?

SOLVED...I removed the burned wire and replaced with a temporary one. Seems to have done the trick.. I put a loom around it and kept it away from the hot pipe on that side . Thanks for the help. Still wondering if there is insulation tape for these few wires that come close to excessive heat

Thanks again

i suppose you could cut a small strip of header wrap and wrap the wire in that stuff. not sure how well it would hold to a spark plug wire though.

Put some plug wire sleeves on the wires and you won't have anymore problems.Alot of guys with headers use these for protection. You can get these at Summit Racing or most performance parts sites..WW

It's not tape, it's plastic spiral loom. My 94 has it from the factory in certain spots that run closer to the manifolds or in areas that might chafe. You can get it in auto stores, although I'd agree with other posts here that if you're really concerned about it there are sleeves that you can buy to really protect the wires from the heat.
