I have an 84 with a leaking fuel tank. It is now impossible to remove the rear bumper cover with out costing lots of dollars in body work. Can the tank be dropped out the bottom?
the rear bumper should be removed and the tank will come straight out of the back of the car. why are you unable to remove the rear bumper?
You need to remove the tail lights, gas door, rear inner fender wells and rear license plate. Its not easy, but it doesn't cause any body work. Why do you think the gas tank is leaking, won't hold pressure?
Maybe his rear bumper is fiberglass and glassed into the body?
There is a thread on here with a lot of pictures that shows a gas tank extraction. I did a quick search but couldn't find it. I remember the guy was located in England.
Yes the rear bumper cover is glassed onto the body. I know it is leaking because of the puddle of gas under the car coming out of the two pin holes in the bottom of the tank. Glad to hear the awesome news that it is possible to replace. I thought I was in for huge dollars getting it replaced. Now I am hoping its a weekend event.

You should be able to remove the boot around your filler neck. Maybe its something as simple as a line leaking there.

Then its going to be very difficult. You'll have to remove the spare tire assembly, exhaust, and remove the bumper support.
