I just purchased an 89 C4 Base coupe. Engine is quite dirty. I've heard pro's and cons on cleaning.... And what is Opti?
The Opti is the distributor on the LT1 and LT4 cars.
You don't have one on your '89, since it still uses the conventional small block Chevy distributor at the rear of the intake manifold.
They both perform the same function, just located differently between the two engines.
Washing an engine compartment on any modern car can cause issues.
Don't spray water (especially high pressure) at any electrical connection.
Simple green sprayed everywhere followed by a hose down on shower setting.
Then Armor All Tire Foam sprayed everywhere, let the foam sit, wipe some stuff, comes out really nice.
I used a mix of simple green and engine degreaser. Spayed it on via a low pressure sprayer you can get in Lowes and Home Depot. Let it sit for a few, maybe 10 minutes, and then used a hose, low pressure nozzle. I made sure not to spray direct on any electrical connectors, distributor, etc. then after it dried, and I was sure car ran fine, I used the Armoral Tire Foam trick. Mine is an 1985, so no Opti

Get yourself a solvent gun and a gal of the white gas for your coleman stove, brake down several carboard boxes and put them under the car. The white gas will brake down any petrolium base junk and will run off to the ground. Oh yeah do this in well ventelated area (outside) and wait awhile before driving the car, it will dry quick.
newbie, this is a recipe for a disaster, first off there the fire/explosion possibility, next is the hazardous material aspect if it runs down the driveway, and into any storm/runoff

great way to turn a 89 into a Roman Candle.
Extra care must be taken in consederation, the storm drain is not an issue if you have drip pans or the cardboard under the car. The gas actually dry fast leaving only the dirt it broke down...
How about a more environmentally friendly way, I did this on my '86. Go to pay store and by a can of engine degreaser made by Gunk. Get a freezer bag to over distributor cap, and place the cover back in place over it. I did it with the engine warm, not hot. Already this stuff everywhere and let sit as per directions. Hose it off and you will see a huge difference.
Key word....safer.
Gunk Engine Degreaser is still a combustible liquid with a flash point of 100° to 200°F. Warm engine is ok just not hot. Simple Green works pretty good.
