Wheel bearing checking
I tried entering my first SCCA auto cross event last week. When I came to the tech line the offical started rocking my car rear back and forth. He then told me my rear wheel bearings were bad and I could not race. Can you tell if the bearings are bad by rocking the car. I have teken many a fast turn with this car and never heard any strange sounds. If the rear hub bearings are bad would I hear it when I drive normal on the road?

To check, jack up the rear. Grab the tire at top and bottom, and try to rock it in a vertical plane. If there is play, the bearing is bad.

It was probably a judgement call. If you jack up the rear end and grab the tire at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock and have play it would indicate the bearings are going bad. He is probably saving you some expense. Autocross is hard on bearings. Bad bearings failing could then destroy the axle on the half shaft....big $$$$$ for you.
Suggest you jack up the car and check for play and change the bearings which are probably needed.
