Looking under the car, and noticed the exhaust system has two small "cat" like canisters near the front of the car, then the cat itself in the center and of course the mufflers. What are the two smaller canister like things? If I put new mufflers on the car, can I get rid of the cat in the center of the car and just go straight to the mufflers? My guess is no... thanks
Those are pre-cats. You can remove them or the cat, and do anything you like to the exhaust if you don't live in an area that gets emissions testing...or don't mind failing. Otherwise best to keep it and go with a cat-back...or emissions legal headers and exhaust.

On your '96, the 'cannisters' in the front attached to the manifolds are your cats. The center cannister where the the two pipes go in is the resonator.
So yes, you could do that with the mufflers. alot of folks put an x-pipe in that spot as well. The reason for the reonator is really self explainatory, it reduces resonance in the cabin of the car. An x-pipe provides a sound cancellation factor that does pretty much the same thing.

What are you trying to achieve in terms of sound?
There are no "pre-cats" on the late model C4 like his '96.
