When turning my headlights on or off there is a loud clanking/banging sound which lasts for a few seconds. This happens when the lights are fully open or closed. What could be causing it and how do I repair it?
I just rebuilt mine. It's a 93 also. It's the nylon bushings in the headlight motors. There are 3 bushings in each motor. These are round pins that have deteriorated in the last 20 years. Not a bad job to replace. I took the entire headlight assy off the car to the work on it. That was best for me. On this forum, type in headlight motor repair and there are detailed instructions on how to do this. The passenger side was a bit harder than the drivers side. The new pins are cheap and can be bought from any of the vendors on this forum. Also, i bought 2 new gears but i really didn't need them.
Did this on my 40th a month ago. I would turn the lights off and pop pop pop for about 4 seconds.
Follow the guide thats written, there is also some good U Tube videos that show step by step.
Only problem i ran into that wasn't covered is on my passenger side one of the bushings cracked and caused the gear to wedge into the motor gear. it would rotate but wouldn't come out of the housing.
To fix this i had to remove the knurl **** on the motor you manually open and close the lights with. Its pressed on so pop it off.
Remove the 2 screws on the motor housing to separate the 2 half's of the motor.
You can then pull the stater out, mind you the bushing come out with it but are attached with wire, don't lose the 2 springs. Mark the 2 halves of the motor so you can match them up. The motor is sensitive to being 180 out.
When re-installing, pull the motor stater out of the top section of the case, its just magnetic. Then you can align and install it through the bushing. This is the hardest part. I used a small zip tie to hold one in my hand while holding the motor then i was able to use my free hand to pull the other bushing into place, the motor dropped right in.
Carefully add the top housing, I say carefully because when the magnetic field grabs the stater it can pull it out of the bushings.
Bolt it back together.
Once the lights are back together, when you actuate them if one opens while the other closes. The Motor is 180 out. Just remove the housing bolts on the motor and spin it 180. Mine have stickers on the cases so it was easy to line them.
Yep, your headlight gears are wearing down. It's an easy and fairly quick job speaking that I did it. There are some great YouTube videos that show exactly what to do. I followed that and got the job down really quickly.
