That's the door that controls whether the air in the cabin is recirculated or brought in from outside.

On a C68 (electronic) HVAC system it only recirculates in the AUTO mode.

On C60 (manual) HVAC systems it recirculates in the MAX mode.

Cliff my 1991 C68 has a AUTO and a RECIRCULATE mode. Is this different from the pre-90
model cars ?

They completely redid the HVAC electronics in 1990. I don't know anything about it, except that they moved all the functionality from the HVAC control head to the HVAC programmer. Side note: I just found out that the FSM calls it the ECC -- Electronic Climate Control.

The blend door cable goes to an L-shaped lever (#5) on the heater housing that controls the position of the blend door (#15) through a rod (#13):

The blend door is inside the evaporator housing on the firewall in the engine compartment. You can see it by removing the blower motor resistors.

The blend door lever and cable is located on the heater core housing. It's easiest to get to it by taking off the passenger side kick panel (several 7mm screws).

I have seen a photograph somewhere but I couldn't find it to post to this thread.
