Quite a bit, actually. The wheels are directional and the turbine design aided cooling and airflow.
While the design may not please everyone, it didn't bother the 50,000+ 1984 buyers.
Many of us still appreciate the design

If you had been alive during the eighties, you'd have noticed that these wheels were very similar to the Indy car wheels of those days.
Other mfgr's copy-catted the design as as well. (Nissan I believe) Smooth on the sides for airstream and speed. Vented for brake cooling.
A very active and purposeful design at the time. Yep, ugly by today's standards.
