I will be installing a new stereo system in my 1986 C4. Can I use the existing speaker wires or do they need to be replaced. I May use the existing speakers as I think they are ok. I will certainly make sure the system I purchase can drive them if I decide to keep the Bose. But if not will have have to rewire.
I have an 89' so are cars should be almost exactly the same.
I think it is better to just replace the whole system IMO, and ditch the bose. It really is not that hard, I did my whole system originally in 1 full day.
I replaced the head unit, and bother front and rear speakers. I fit 6.5" in the doors and 6x9's in the rear. It really is not as hard as you would think and the rewire is probably one of the easier parts.
You can use newer wire and re-run it all, but I think that is a lot of extra work that is not needed unless the wiring it damaged. Unless the wire is damaged, then I would not run new wires unless putting in a new amp to power the speakers.
Decide what YOU are wanting and I can help you with most things needed and can give you any tips you need.
I would get all new wiring, remember your wires are 28 years old!
Ditch the Bose and get new double din and new speakers, I did and it sounds great!
The only bad thing is he has an 87', and like my 89' we don't get the luxury of a double din
Same with you , I agree with running new wiring, but unless you are adding new amps, it is easier to rewire the old stuff and use it, as it is also good wiring. When I added my amps and subs, I took out all the old wiring and ran the new wire in its old spot and all the old wiring looked just fine.
Before I added the subs and amp I used the old wiring with no issues and it sounded fine with new speakers and a new head unit.
