Default Parking Brake Handle Replacement

I am having a really tough time installing my parking brake handle. I got it out really easy but can't figure out how to get the cable back into place. The descriptions I found on the net are not very descriptive and no one has pictures or diagrams. All Data and Mitchell are of no help either as I have access to both. I really can't figure out the directions for the disabling and enabling the automatic adjuster.

The best instructions I could find say this to disable it:
Using screwdriver or wire, hold drive pawl so that is disengaged from drive sector.
Insert nail or drift through hole in anchor plate to retain drive pawl in disengaged position.
Move lever until it aligns with lock pawl.
Depress button on lever and move lever to down position.
Front cable can now be pulled to rear to gain the slack needed.

I have tried everything I know how but these instructions aren't making sense. Which part is the drive pawl? Which part is the lock pawl? Which position is engaged or disengaged? Which hole in the anchor plate?

Anyway I do it I can't get the cable to come close to reaching the slot that it goes in no matter how hard I pull on it. At this point I am beyond frustrated and have given up for the day. Using these pics of the assembly, can anyone give me more descriptive instructions than what I have found?

Hi,

I have now replaced my parking brake handle for the fourth time, and whilst it is possible to disable the pawl, to allow the black plastic retainer to rotate to its unadjusted position with the lever fitted to the car, I have found it easier to do this with the lever unbolted as it is easier to see what you are trying to do, then bolt the lever to the car.

make sure you have the front cable with maximum slack, it is very easy when the cable is loose, for the cables to become disconnected from the fitments under the car and from the return spring.

I can fit a lever in above 15 minutes now, including removing the seat, it is worth practicing disabling the pawl and resetting the retaining cog, off the car.

I tried putting in the cable without bolting the lever in but in doing so was not able to pull the cable hard enough to line up the bolt holes, much less hold it in position long enough to get a bolt in once I got it there.

The way I think to disable the pawl is to put something through that hole (albeit that doesn't work half the time) to block the black piece from moving into the other piece and linking them together. Problem is the black part the cable goes into will only rotate about 90 degrees when it looks like I need more than that cause I have no room at all to work with the cable.

I will try it again a different way today and see how it works.

I figured it out. Amazing what sleeping on a problem can do. Got it bolted back in within two minutes. I still don't understand the parking brake adjuster, but all I did was attach the cable to the black piece with it rotated all the way down. Then I just pulled the entire assembly into place until the bolts lined up. Worked like a charm and was very easy.

glad you got it sorted, just hope you don't have to replace it as often as I have.
