Default 1984 Lug Nuts

Looking for pictures of the original lug nuts from an 84. Looking to install the original wheels back onto my 84 and I'm thinking the lug nuts are unique to the 84's in that they are black in color. Looking for pics or details that would assist me in obtaining the correct lug nut set for my 84. Thank you for taking the time to read this!

So, if that's correct, then would the lug nuts have a black plastic cap threaded on over those?

They were black and GM/OE would have been 14046906 and was used on many GM products of the time.

That number has changed several times but they are still available from GM.

I bought some really nice after-market that were 'exact' matches a few years ago and the finish was excellent. I've seen some more recently and the finish wasn't great and maybe wouldn't suit some.

A Dorman 611-090 if you could "pick and choose" would do well.

open-ended, double-threaded with caps I don't believe came around until '85.

So,were the lug nuts themselves black and one piece or did they have black caps?

They had a "pressed stamped stainless painted/coated" cap applied. The originals were quite durable but all of the replacements aren't generally much.

I did mine "locally" from an independent jobber that did sales to most of the tire stores, dealers and alignment shops in a large metropolitan area.

Stopped at the dealer today and they parts guy said that the original black lug nuts were NLA. The part number has been replaced and the part updated with standard polished lug nuts. Kinda sucks. Stinking oil fill cap was NLA as well.

What might work satisfactorily is purchase some of the Dorman product because it has the "correct" appearance and you have to "assume" the stainless cap has been prepped "some". If you're happy with the nut then you strip the finish and paint with a POR15 of the gloss that you'd like OR maybe powder-coat.

Maintenance would require a "plastic/nylon lined" socket that usually aren't of much quality OR use a heavier-weight sandwich bag or trash bag and a conventional 6-pt socket. Use a 19V drill to run-on the nuts and then do the final torque by hand.

I had considered this but just ended up using the stainless capped that I had a 25 or 30 of.

Ok, I picked up a set of Dorman's from Advance Auto. Got the set of 20 for $42.83 out the door. I'll post some pics of what I bought.

Here's the lug nuts that I picked up. Some were painted correctly and some were painted all black..even have paint chips. I can live with them considering what I paid. I'll touch them up.
