Mechanic Called me Back....... Drum Roll Please......Blown Head Gasket $1500. Parents want me to sell as is. I would try to do the job my self but i lack the experiance and mroe importantly the tools to do the job. Is there a forum member near me that would like to spend a few hours in my garage with me. How much does a new head gasket cost anyway?
head gaskets 20 bucks tops. I just bought an entire felrpo kit for 45 off ebay. You dont need any special tools, just a good socket set, wrenchs and a torque wrench. Should take a novice a weekend. Took me about 8 hours on a z28.
Your getting shafted on the labour charge, 65 bucks an hour, that 23 hours labour.
Dont sell it, its sharp car. There is a chance the head could be cracked, 84/85's heads are crack prone. I'd have the head checked before you put it back on.
O yeah...I don't want to sell it as is beacue i will get absolutley screwed on the price. need to get at least 4 grand out of her and i would like to get somewhere between 6 and 7 grand. I can't see letting her got for less then what i paid. Plus i would like to get back "some" of what i put into her. So maybe if i can fix it it will definatley be worth it.
Good luck selling a car for that price with a blown head gasket. Yea it may be a easy fix, but someone doesn't want someone elses problems. Plus just mentioning the fact a car has a bad head gasket will make most buyers go "oh dear" and steer clear. So all in all, brake out the tools, work by getting the intake off *pain I know on TPI's* depending on what side, take off accessories, Get a manual to take off head bolts in proper sequence and to reinstall them, and a good 1/2 drive wrench to break the head bolts lose with, and your pretty much set. This your first time? with help, it might take you a weekend. good luck
What was the cause of the blown gasket? Did he inspect the water pump or the serpentine belt? Was the pump ever changed? Did it need changing? Was the belt ever changed? Did it need changing? Just looking for a cause if there is one.
thanks....I will be out of town the next week. Have to go to florida to help with the grandparents....(grandfather in the hospitol and getting out soon) so yeah..........i will have net access so i will be intouch. Thanks all
I called my old autoshop teacher to see if he wants to get under the hood once again.. Thats if he wants to take time out of his summer. Hopefully he calls me back =).
Come on, someone that lives around him please give him a hand. I wish I lived close by so I could help out but I think it would be about a 2 day drive so I don't think I will make it there. Sooner or later someone will offer a helping hand. If you took a shop class you should deffently be able to do this. Just take your time and if you get stuck just ask for help. Good luck.
If you're gonna do the head gaskets (with help of others) I would say grab a cam and a carb setup and stick that on. :D THEN you'll have a ROCKET of a car. (IMHO a carb setup is better than the CFI, and cheaper than an aftermarket TPI)
