Has anyone changed their fuel filter? Had my oil changed yesterday and I picked up a fuel filter for $12 for them to do at the same time. I could not see it in engine compartment. They looked up on their computer and it showed 1.0 hours labor on a coupe and an additional .9 for a convertible! $150 to change a $12 filter! Is it buried back near the fuel tank?
I havent done it yet but you have to take the X brace off the undercarraige to get at the fitting. At least that is on my 92 LT1 convertible.
- need to remove the x-brace on the verts. $150 to change a $12 filter - welcome to the wonderful world of corvette labor - - if you have real issues with it, change it yourself. as long as there's no problems, you're OK, problems, that $150 thing will seem like a bargain. personally, I doubt I could do it in my garage, from start to finish, in 2 hours. I've never done a convertible, but I have done four coupes. anybody that thinks it's a 15 minute job is full of it...
personally, I would rather change the fuel filter myself. I know of at least one horror story from a fuel filter change on a 95 coupe, and that was done at a chevy dealer.
I changed mine on my 93 Vert last summer after I replaced the fuel pump.
I didn't have to remove the X brace.
I used 2 long combo wrenches. I took both lines off the bottom of the filter.
Then I pulled it up through the engine compartment, the flexable fuel lines have room if you remove the mounting bolt on the air box.
Then I removed the filter, reinstalled in reverse.
I know its a lot easier to remove the X brace but I was working in my garage and didnt want to drop it if i didn't have too.
FYI, the filter is located on the passenger side of the firewall right where it kicks up from the floor pan. You can see it with flashlight from the top.

You tube vid. He really should have disconnected the battery as the filter is somewhat close to the starter. If you touch the posts with your wrench there will be a fire from the fuel spill that you always get when you do this job.
I worked in a hospital and have seen the results of gasoline burns.
Thanks for the replies. You guys are correct about removing the X brace on the convertible. The car only has 23000 miles on it and am having no problems-just thought it would be simple! Took it back for a refund from "wallyworld"! As one comment said-Corvettes can be expensive unless you are wrench capable! I'm lucky I ran into a shop where the manager worked for Chevy until 98 and worked on Corvettes only. Forum members are just as good.
