Default '94 rear end question

We just purchased a '94 LT1 rag top. I took it in to have it greased, and the MX told me that I have a "sealed rear end", no way to check the lubricant in it! He said you have to pull the axle to check fluid level?
The guy has a shop policy that won't let you get near the car when on a lift!

Do I need a new mechanic? The Chilton book says nothing about any such thing! THANKS for help and comments!

I vote for new mechanic. Fill plug on passenger side of diff. 3/8 allen wrench to remove IIRC.

Its on the passenger side in front of the axle. Should have a red tag on the plug that says to use positive traction fluid only if your car has positive traction.

To make it easier for your next mechanic here is a link to a photo of diff being filled. Note you do not have to remove the axle - they were installing a new rebuilt differential.

Definitely time for a new mechanic. Preferably, one who has eyes. Bonus points if he can read.

Congrats on the new acquisition!

Live well,

Was it a family owned business or the chain variety?

Looks good. I am lucky I found guy who worked for Chevy until 1998, worked on mostly Camaros and Corvettes, and is now a manager of a local small chain of repair facilities in the Panama City FL area. Actually, they just checked my differential among other things 2 days ago. Love to pick his brain on C4's when he is not busy! Good luck.

Start with #4 post here and read on. Chris Petris at Petris Enterprises used to sell a kit for this too:

Was there a reason that you selected this facility? OP - your Chilton is better than "nothing" but some mention "not much". If the car is going to be with you for a while you might want to consider a Helm FSM.

I don't know that "family owned" or "chain" is relevant and maybe, just maybe he's just a little short fellow.

I vote for a new mechanic. If he doesn't know, at least he should find out instead of lying to you. Make sure he knows why he will never see your car again.
