Default car just died while driving ....

1993 took it out this morning and got about 2 miles down the road when suddenly it started acting really strange. was running fine when it suddenly down shifted (or felt like it) quickly two times, the SES light comes on, check gauges and then the car loses all power. pulled over and tried to restart but it just cranks and wont fire. pull the following codes

module 1 - H32, H34, H36, H38
module 4 - H16
module 9 - H83

it showed a module 1.0 but showed nothing.

any info or suggestion much appreciated.

start with the basics - check your fuel pressure...

I suspect you have an Opti related issue here, a Code 16 is a [Low Resolution] signal Malfunction. A car will not run with a Code 16 set.

Watch this video and research your FSM..

I will look into the opti issue. I sure hope its not that has I replaced it around 4000 miles ago.

Just a WAG because I have no idea what those codes are (other than the 16 that was just revealed to be electronic ignition related), Check battery voltage first, my WAG is alternator quit and car ran on straight battery until the ECU shut it down, did you get to peak under the hood yet? Broken belt sure would be a blessing. Best of luck, if anyone does know what all those codes are, please post them?

code 16 is low res pulse from optispark, that would not crop up from a broken belt.. that would only come from the optical sensor. you wild guess is just that, a wild guess.

Yeah, could be the opti. Could also be fuel pump or ICM. Google, lt1 no.start diagnostic. Should help you.

Lol - Thanks for keeping things on track for the OP

I'm only a year into these cars and mine is an 87. I'll try and keep my WAG's mostly to a minimum until I get through the system and also stick to the older models! Are the 93's on the OBD2 path that early? Sorry if a dumb question...

No sir, the '93 are still OBD1. That didn't come in until '96. C4's are broke down between the early cars, 84-91 and late cars, 92-96.

Thanks Eat My Dust, is that breakdown on years the engine and electronics are the same? As far as I know, most parts they are listed 84 -87? Thanks in advance!

I've always heard it as drivetrain changes as the most was done at that time, however the interior was changed in 1990 and bodywork in 1991. Most stuff labelled for 84-87 is most likely suspension related parts as that changed in 1988.

I'd check for a fuel pump or its optispark-related.

Actually Johns' wag wasn't that improbable. What it suggests is a cascading failure. Belt breaks, alternator stops charging the battery, just enough voltage to start and run 2 miles, then voltage too low for a consistant opti signal, EGR, MAP, ECM, etc.

obd1 codes:
16 distributor ignition system, low res.,circuit malfunction
32 EGR solenoid
34 MAP sensor
36 distributor ignition system, hi res.,circuit malfunction
38 brake pedal position switch, torque converter clutch
83 reverse gear inhibit solenoid -circuit malfunction

Lots of other posabilities too, bad ground, shorted wires, circuit failures, (out of gas ).

Good luck Chatham, hope it's something simple.

Voltage regulator?

desertmike, thank you this is very informative..I think Chatham will be on to something if he investigates the code 16 issue, and the related diagnostics to resolve it..hopefully NOT one of the diodes in the optical sensor, that would stink with just 4000 miles on a new opti...

Another thought to add to the confusion...
Just realized all the codes you pulled have an H prefix, which usually means historical (ie. not recent). I believe recent codes have a C prefix so the ones you pulled may not be indicative of your current issue, especially if the ecm codes weren't re-set when you changed the opti.

I was wondering that as well about the codes. I didn't change the opti when it was done so I don't know if the codes were cleared at that time. this is the first time that I have pulled the codes as I have never had to before.

Good catch on the codes 'Fred' Is the best way to clear codes on the Corvette to just disconnect the negative battery connection?

When do you think you will get to dig in Chatham?

I was able to go out and runs some tests this morning. I followed the info provide here http://www.mainstreamtopics.com/foru...rt-diagnostic/

plenty of fuel pressure but no spark. no spark at plugs, no spark at injector. all things seem to be leading to the opti. when I got to the test section for opti I run into a problem. there wire colors called out in the test info is not what I have. here is what I have

wht
blk
wht
pnk/blk

so which wire is which? which do I use to test for hot? which ones to test for 5v etc.

looked around the opti and I don't see a water pump issue. I do know that the pump was replaced with the opti was replace back in 2010.
