By now, everyone who owns or has owned a Corvette has heard of the collapse of the floor in the Corvette Museum floor. In looking at the photos of the floor area that collapsed on the Museum website, it appears that there is not steel reinforcement (rebar) in the concrete floor. Is that a flaw in the design or just construction practice in the area?

This was discussed over in OT, and while I can't locate that post, in a nutshell it was reported that rebar wasn't a requirement because of the method of construction. And, even if there was rebar, there is no way it would be self-supporting without a floor under it.

Seems the concrete is reinforced with the materials used to give it its strength, i.e., 3500#, etc.

A concrete expert can fill in the blanks, but I think you get the idea from my brief overview

It's being hotly debated in the big thread over in CFOT. One camp says that rebar wasn't needed because fiber was in the concrete mix and the other side says that steel mat at minimum.

Head over there and check it out.
