The radio on my 92 roadster has static all the time. It's not a lot but always there. The antenna is working fine and going all the way up. Any suggestions on the cause?
:(
Shut the engine off and listen to the radio. If no static, then you have a spark plug wire that is arcing causing what sounds like static to you. Next, unplug the antenna at the rear of the radio and measure the ohms between the center conductor of the radio plug and the extended antenna. It should be very low, or a short. If the coax center conductor is broken, this could pass enough signal to operate the radio, but cause the signal to be weak and susceptable to normal static. Your antenna tip must have a ball , or small **** on it. Sharp edges on metal with air flowing past , generate static electricity and a smooth ball of metal or insulator even will prevent this.
Does the static change when you rev the engine? Also do you notice it on AM, FM or both?
If the answer is yes to the first question and AM to the second you there is a device you can purchase for about 20 bucks at Radio Shack. It is a power conditionioner that you connect to both the red and black power source wires going to your radio.
I just installed one on my my wife's vehicule and it solved the problem. Good Luck!
