Here's been my experience with Rain-X:
Pro: it works okay.
Con: it will turn your fingers yellow if you don't wear rubber gloves.
I don't know why you'd want to remove it; if it works leave it on, if it doesn't work, then ignore it.
What I've found works even better than Rain-X is to wipe your blades down with Armor All. Then, use the wipers. The invisible film of Armor All deposited on the windshield works just as well as the Rain-X....and it helps preserve your blades. Believe me, the rain will bead off the window with AA on the surface. It will amaze you.
Put it on according to the instructions and it works great. I use it on my 1936 Packard convertible sedan. Once it is on you do not even know it is there until the rain starts.
Pros: It works!!! I use it on my hoopdees when ever I take a road trip. Most times when it rains, you don't even need to use the wipers.
Cons: It leave some minor smudging when you remove it. The smudging doesn't seem to affect visibility though. Also, it doesn't last long.
I' gonna try the OP's Armor All thingy - makes sense to me.

I use it all the time on my '55 Nomad who's wipers are useless.
It works on the C4 just as well. You'll need to use Bonami or something like it to remove it if you're not satisfied though.
RainX works well enough that a friend of mine uses it on the windshield and had removed the wiper blades. (Granted it was in Arizona so not much rain, but he swears by it.)
I think I will try the Armor All on the wipers. Sounds easy and it might work. Worth a try.
