I have owned a C4 for most of my adult life. I have always owned more than one car an tried to keep the miles off the vette.
Yesterday My DD GTO's drive shaft carrier bearing went out. Apparently you are not supposed to drive them hard.
Now I'm forced to drive the Vette to work until I get the GTO fixed. My point is... thinking back it I realized all these years I have had "Corvette" as a back up and they have always been reliable.
As with any car, as long as it has been properly maintained, it should be fine. However, an older car is always subject to those old parts wearing out and needing to be replaced.
I've used my 85 as a back-up on occasion myself and it's never failed me.

I'm not asking, I'm telling. All my cars are properly maintained by an ASE certified Tech. That does not keep them from breaking down.
My 86 turned into my DD for months at a time and never let me down. Now its the 91'S turn.
Maybe I will sell all my cars and buy a fleet of C4s.
97,000 on my 85. No problems as a daily. I just do regular maintenance on Saturday mornings. Things that would normally wear out on any car I stay ahead of before they go out and I buy the best stuff out there for it.
I daily drove my '88 and then my '94 for a 100 mile commute year round for over 5 years and about 100k miles. Never let me down. Just some normal maintenance items. About the only items were an EGR valve on the '88 and rear wheel bearings and half shaft u-joints on the '94.
They are easily reliable enough for a daily driver. And fun too!

I made a deal with my C4. I won't expect it to be any more reliable than it wants to ....as long as it promises to eat up a great deal of my spare time & money!
Mine is not very reliable. It broke the day I got it. It is in pieces now with the dash out. I think there is a lot of stuff on them like that that is guaranteed to break

I heard once that there are Friday Built cars and Monday Built cars.
Friday Built cars seem to be more reliable and Monday Built cars less.
They say because of the workers mood.
Monday= Workers sluggish, Unmotivated= poorer Quality.
Friday= Workers alert, Movivated for the weekend, better Quality.

Just a interesting tid bit.
I build Lopi hearths/fireplaces for a living. That's true in my industry, too!
My `95 has not been reliable. Though I am not the original owner I bought it with 32K on the odometer back in `07. In that time I have had to get the Transmission rebuilt at 47K. Some other things were the heater core, back rear glass falling in on the convertible top and a few other things that have cost a good deal of $. I do drive it everyday.
Others have told me they have had better luck with their C4. I love the car when it`s right.
For what it's worth. MSN just published a report on the 10 most reliable cars over 20 years old. The C4 made the list. Reasons given: engine turns low RPMs and is under stressed, a strong, proven drive train, and most important- Corvette owners tend to be fanatics about their Corvette and keep the car well maintained. Anybody agree or disagree with the report?
Obviously he kept on top of any issues that came up.
IMO, a stock C-4 isn't that much different from any other car mechanically. It's not an exotic Ferrari, for instance.
Now modified is another story.........
